Scientists at Disney Research have developed mind-blowing technology that can make pretty much anything — doorknobs, human skin, water — responsive to touch.

Imagine a desk that’s all touch-sensitive, says VentureBeat’s John Koetsier. How about a couch that automatically flicks on the TV when you sit down? Or a doorknob that locks when you tap it. Also consider a smart swimming pool that “detects a young child who can’t swim,” says Extreme Tech’s Anthony. “The possibilities of Touché are almost endless, and really rather exciting.

With the increasing popularity of electronic readers and e-books, the future use of hard-bound books also comes under question. While designers have responded with the likes of lightingaccessories and even fashion made entirely out of old books, French Canadian artist Guy Laramée tackles it from a decidedly philosophical — and creative — perspective, carving intricate, three-dimensional landscapes that look amazingly real up close.

High-Speed Video Reveals Cats’ Secret Tongue Skills

High-speed videos reveal the strange technique and delicate balance of physical forces cats use to lap milk from a bowl.

Unlike dogs, who use their tongues as ladles to scoop water into their jaws, cats pull columns of liquid up to their mouths using only the very tips of their tongues.

“Cats are just smarter than dogs from the point of view of fluid mechanics,” said civil engineer Roman Stocker of MIT.

Cats’ tongues operate more like octopus tentacles or elephant trunks, Stocker found. The study’s results could have implications for designing soft, flexible robots.

Stocker grew curious about how cats lap about three years ago while watching his housecat, Cutta Cutta, eating breakfast.

“I started to think, there had to be something interesting about the mechanisms of how the cat was getting the water or milk into the mouth, because it had to overcome gravity,” he said.

Cutta Cutta’s tongue flicked in and out of his mouth too quickly for Stocker to study with his naked eye. So he borrowed a high-speed video camera from a colleague at MIT.

Speed of light may have been broken

Okay guys, this one is hot off the press. I’ve only found two sources for this (here and here) that have been posted in the last hour. I have to say that I immediately doubt the validity of this, but I feel I should bring it to your attention anyway.

Reports from our good friends at CERN say that they’ve observed particles traveling at faster than light speeds. For those of you who know a bit about relativity, this ain’t all that cool. The speed of light is basically meant to be the fastest speed there is, and if this wasn’t the case then we may have a major breakdown of Einstein’s theory of relativity.

The scientists at CERN have concluded this based off results in which a beam of neutrinos fired from a particle accelerator in Geneva traveled 434 miles 60 nanoseconds faster than it should have. This may not sound like much, but the error was calculated at 10 nanoseconds and the scientists themselves seem fairly adamant in their results.

    LOL WAIT WAT

This up to 1000 years old snow has metamorphosed into highly pressurized glacier ice that contains almost no air bubbles. Thus it absorbs the visible light despite the scattered shortest blue fraction, giving it its distinct deep blue waved appearance. This cavity in the glacier ice formed as a result of a glacial mill, or moulin.

Rain and meltwater on the glacier surface is channelled into streams that enter the glacier at crevices. The waterfall melts a hole into the glacier while the ponded water drains towards lower elevations by forming long ice caves with an outlet at the terminus of the glacier. The fine grained sediments in the water along with wind blown sediments cause the frozen meltwater stream to appear in a muddy colour while the top of the cave exhibits the deep blue colour.

Due to the fast movement of the glacier of about 1 m per day over uneven terrain this ice cave cracked up at its end into a deep vertical crevice, called cerrac. This causes the indirect daylight to enter the ice cave from both ends resulting in homogeneous lighting of the ice tunnel.

    APOD: The Universe Nearby

    Credit: 2MASS, T. H. Jarrett, J. Carpenter, & R. Hurt

Explanation: What does the universe nearby look like? This plot shows nearly 50,000 galaxies in the nearby universe detected by the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) in infrared light. The resulting image is anincredible tapestry of galaxies that provides limits on how the universe formed and evolved. The dark band across the image center is blocked by dust in the plane of our own Milky Way Galaxy. Away from the Galactic plane, however, each dot represents a galaxy, color coded to indicate distance. Bluer dots represent the nearer galaxies in the 2MASS survey, while redder dots indicating the more distant survey galaxies that lie at a redshift near 0.1. Named structures are annotated around the edges. Many galaxies are gravitationally bound together to form clusters, which themselves are loosely bound into superclusters, which in turn are sometimes seen to align over even larger scale structures.

Planets Without Orbits? Astronomers Make ‘Exciting’ Discovery

Astronomers have found 10 potential planets as massive as Jupiter wandering through a slice of the Milky Way galaxy, following either very wide orbits or no orbit at all. And scientists think they are more common than the stars.

These mysterious bodies, apparently gaseous balls like the largest planets in our solar system, may help scientists understand how planets form.

Skysurvey.org is the largest ever true color all-sky photograph. 5 kilopixel panorama of 37,440 exposures from 2 hemispheres. This is what you’d see if the Earth suddenly became transparent and the sky were 3000 times brighter. I love how strongly you can perceive the disc of the Milky Way; we’re at the outer edge so there’s a lot of stars between us and the core.
